The Slovene national team, by all means a very pleasant surprise of the World Cup, gave a hard time to both the American and English teams and kept the whole Group C in suspense to the final moment. The team proved to be homogeneous and self-confident, which is something that a number of the 'big' teams lacked in the World Cup this year. The Slovene squad was in excellent physical shape and their play enthused World Cup followers both in Slovenia and elsewhere in the world.
The Slovene team did say goodbye to South Africa after the group stage, however, in Slovenia they were nevertheless welcomed as national heroes, who had united their homeland. Twenty-three football players and the expert staff members did their job in a heroic, upstanding, self-confident and superb manner. The team fell short of making it into the knockout stage, which they had been trying to until the very end, but they are heroes, who have a very special place in Slovenia's history.
Looking at the final results in all eight world cup groups, it is evident that the Slovene players under head coach Matjaž Kek boasted a fighting spirit and pluck and thus got more points than many of the football superpowers.
