NK Dravograd was founded in 1948. On the initiative of Marjan Pušnik, the Dravograd Football School has been operating as part of the club since 1992 and has in the few short years become one of the most successful football schools in Slovenia. In 1992, the club was promoted to the Slovenian First League. Its biggest success was participation in the final of the Slovenian National Cup in 2004.
